Principles of Cooperation
Under the Agreed Principles of Co-operation, MSG countries commit themselves to the principles of respect of each other’s sovereignty and to cooperate in promoting the following common interests:
(a) Melanesian heritage with its unique cultures, traditions, customs and values;
(b) Friendly relations with each other and other international organizations like the South Pacific Forum (now the Pacific Islands Forum) and the United Nations;
(c) Need for “networking” and free interaction amongst Melanesian States;
(d) Respect for each other’s sovereignty;
(e) Promotion of economic and technical cooperation; and
(f) Maintain peace and harmony in the region
Since the inaugural meeting of July 1986, various MSG summits have been held throughout the region. Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and the FLNKS of New Caledonia have been attending the Summits as full members. The Republic of Fiji, who initially attended as an observer has been a full member since its admission in 1996.

Our Origins
The birth of the MSG took its origins in late 1970s-early 1980s from a visionary concept of ‘Melanesian Solidarity’ backed by the strong political desire to strive for the entire decolonization and freedom of Melanesian countries and territories that are still dealing with some remnants of the colonial rule in the South Pacific.
From the idea of developing a stronger cultural, political, social and economic (trade) identity and link between the people of Melanesia, the first milestone from this vision was the birth of the “Melanesian Spearhead Group Preferential Trade Agreement”, a regional trade treaty involving the initial MSG member countries such as Papua New Guinea, the Representative of the Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS), Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
